Journal 19/10/11

Today I chose my final band logo/typography design that will appear on my digipack:

I chose this one because it has some kind of intertextual reference to Pulp's font as it is rounded. Also, it shows that the band is keeping to their ideology as it makes them seem fun and that they enjoy life shown through the rounded edges of the font. I also really like that it is the colour 'crimson' so then it stands out.

Band logo/Typography options

This was the first font that I liked and we used it for our mood board but thinking about it I don't think I want the 'crimson' background because it's not how I want my digipack to look and I don't think it would fit with the image I'm thinking of having.

I thought this one was quite cool and 'indie' and would quite possibly go well with my digipack and the band's ideology.

When I first saw this one I liked it but the more I see it the more I think it's wrong for the band and the digipack it seems too young and not the genre of the band.

This one I really like and am considering it to be one of my choices as it does seem retro which fits in with the band's ideology as they are influenced by the 'Britpop' era but it also seems quite fun. However, I'm not sure if it looks a bit too sophisticated for the band.

Even though this one is really simple I really like it. The writing isn't completely straight and sharp so it makes it seem like it fits in with the band's ideology.

I do like this one and it is exactly the same as the first one but doesn't have the 'crimson' background and I definitely prefer it without it.

Journal 14/10/11 Things to think about!

  • Props: How much does powder cost and where can we buy it? Will we have to buy costumes for people to wear?
  • Locations: Where exactly are we planning to film?
  • Intertextual references: References to Pulp's music video?

    Potential Costumes

We wanted the richer 'uncommon' men to be in suits so that they looked smart and posh. In the video they would slowly remove their tie, blazer and shirt to reveal a plain t-shirt that will eventually get covered in powder/paint from the powder/paint fight.

We also wanted the richer 'uncommon' women to be dressed smartly but look like their clothes are expensive. They will also remove some layers to clothes that they will have the powder/paint fight in.

This is an example for one of our 'common' people costumes. We want them to look like they are in lower paid manual work.

We want some people to look like they are unemployed by wearing stereotypical clothes like what you might call a 'chav'.

    Questionnaire Feedback

This was to show how many female to male participants we had as our target audience is mainly male.

This was to show the age range of our target audience. I think it helps us to generalise our results because it was mainly our target audience that answered the questionnaire.

This was just to see what music genre our target audience liked the most. We found that it was mainly alternative which can relate back to our song and we wanted to go with an alternative/indie edge to our music video.

We wanted to see if our target audience thought that our music video went with the song and its lyrics. The results showed that everyone thought that our ideas were appropriate for the lyrics of our song.

We wanted to see if our target audience thought that our music video would fit in with the genre of the song. The results showed that our target audience thought that our ideas worked well with the genre of our song.

We wanted to know if our target audience thought that the band had to have an appearance in their own music video. These results have made us think about the number of appearances our band makes in the music video and we think they should be in it slightly more than we originally planned to do.

We wanted to know whether our target audience liked a narrative storyline with a music video. The majority did like a narrative storyline but it was equal between those who said no and those who said sometimes. We are going to have some kind of narrative but not for the whole way through.

Feedback for the last question: Do you have any ideas that we could include in our music video?
    • I think you're on the right track. Just stick to the basics and this could really work out well.
    • Elephants walking around.
    • Water Pistols and cowboys.
    • British flags and Pulp references.
    • The group of people should release multicoloured balloons into the sky.
    • Hot girls.
Some of these we will actually take into consideration, for example, the water pistols, British flags, Pulp references and the balloons.

Lyrics to 'Common People' by Pulp

She came from Greece she had a thirst for knowledge, This could be where we first
she studied sculpture at Saint Martin's College, introduce the band.
    that's where I,
    caught her eye.
She told me that her Dad was loaded, First common person introduced
I said "In that case I'll have a rum and coca-cola." He could be handed a glass that
She said "Fine." and then in thirty seconds time she said, contains 'rum and cola'

"I want to live like common people, This could be where the first lot of richer people come
I want to do whatever common people do, in and sing a line each.
I want to sleep with common people,
I want to sleep with common people,
    like you."

Well what else could I do -
I said "I'll see what I can do."
I took her to a supermarket,
I don't know why but I had to start it somewhere,
    so it started there.
I said pretend you've got no money,
    she just laughed and said,
    "Oh you're so funny."
    I said "yeah?
Well I can't see anyone else smiling in here.
Are you sure you want to live like common people,
you want to see whatever common people see,
you want to sleep with common people,
you want to sleep with common people,
    like me."
    But she didn't understand,
she just smiled and held my hand.
Rent a flat above a shop,
cut your hair and get a job.
Smoke some fags and play some pool, It might be a good idea to have a narrative going
pretend you never went to school. on here
But still you'll never get it right,
cos when you're laid in bed at night,
    watching roaches climb the wall,
if you call your Dad he could stop it all.

You'll never live like common people, This might be a good place for the powder/paint
you'll never do what ever common people do, fight to begin.
you'll never fail like common people,
you'll never watch your life slide out of view,
and dance and drink and screw,
because there's nothing else to do.

Sing along with the common people,
sing along and it might just get you through,
laugh along with the common people,
laugh along even though they're laughing at you,
and the stupid things that you do.
Because you think that poor is cool.

I want to live with common people,
I want to live with common people etc... The band could be singing in this end shot

And then while the song is slowly ending add an ending so it is like a story: Person sitting at their desk answering a phone call and the camera can pan around showing the powder/paint residue left on their skin.

    Questionnaire

These are the questions we plan on asking people. We want to ask mainly males as we feel that they are more of our target audience.

    Song: Common People

Idea: We want to keep the music video fun and uplifting. We want the concept to be a group of rich ‘uncommon’ people each singing a line of the song and slowly making their way to a public place (a park) where they will have like a powder/paint fight with a large group of ‘common’ people. They all walk away at the end of the fight as if nothing happened. Then we would like to shoot a scene after the song has finished of someone sitting at a desk and they turn around on their phone and their face is covered in the powder/paint. We will also include scenes of the band recording the song in a studio.

    Male/ Female  (Please circle)

    How old are you?

Which genre of music do you like the most? (Please circle)

    Britpop
    Pop
    Indie
    Rock
    Alternative
    Other

    Who is your favourite band?

If you have one, what is your favourite music video?

Do you think that our idea for our music video is appropriate for the song?

Do you think that our idea for our music video is appropriate for the genre of the song?

Do you think that it is necessary/essential for the band to have an appearance in the music video?

Do you like the idea of having a narrative music video that relate to the lyrics?

Do you have any ideas that we could include in our music video?

    Analysis of Evanescence Digipack

Half of the front cover is dark and the other half is like a beam of light entering from the door, this could connote that their music or even the artist is dark but trying to find the light, like she wants to escape from the darkness in her life. The picture is like a narrative as the album's name is called 'The Open Door' and the image is of the artist standing by an open door. This title could also connote to her freedom or something that is missing in her life. The typography of the title is quite gothic which coincides with the genre of the music and artist.

The typography is also quite gothic and alternative on the inside cover. The circle could represent the moon as it links in with the dark and light of the album. There is an insect that looks like a moth above the title which could be to show that as they are nocturnal insects they represent both the darkness and the light of the album as they are attracted to bright lights.

This is the back cover of the digipack and has kept to all the codes and conventions by having a barcode, copyright information and has a list of the songs that are on the album. It looks like the list of songs are on the door from the front cover which has connotations that the artist can see her freedom but still doesn't have it. There are the same representations of light and dark as it looks like night time on the side of the cover but the moon is breaking through the clouds showing the light.

    Feedback

We explained our idea to the rest of the class and overall it showed that everyone liked our idea, wanted to be a part of it and that it was a good concept. This helped us to realise that the idea we have is going to be fun which keeps to 'Crimson's' ideology for life. However, the only thing people said we had to work on was our ending, as it wasn't quite right. This helped us to think of a new way of ending the video so we have a general idea of how our music video is going to be filmed.

    Journal 05/10/11

Today we started to research Digipacks as they are part of our Brief. A Digipack is a foldable CD container. Its codes and conventions consist of pictures that connote the artist's image and style, the names of the songs, the name of the artist, the name of the album, a back front and spine, barcode, copyright information, institution logo and a DVD logo. Some people may choose to buy a Digipack instead of a jewel case because it has a 'cooler' edge, it may also feel like you get something extra.

    Crimson's Mood Board

We wanted to create a mood board that would really relate to our song and genre. We did this by using the brief band's ideology and incorporated it into the song's lyrics. We used photos of bands that influences our band, and other photos of possible locations and ideas. We wanted to make it look very 'British'.
